Eat Your (Gluten-Free) Oatmeal by Carol Fenster

by info@gfreecuisine.com 5. April 2010 07:16
Every family has its favorite breakfast. For my family, it was oatmeal. Made from rolled oats that my mother bought in huge containers, it appeared on the breakfast table every single morning of the week.  Usually served in the typical porridge-like style, we ate it with sugar and a little milk and loved it.

The only times it varied was when my mother forgot to add the salt OR sometimes she would fry leftover oatmeal into what we called “oatmeal mush.” We ate it like pancakes, with maple syrup and butter. To this day, I still love oatmeal and was disappointed when my gluten-free diet prohibited oats.

So, that’s why I was so happy when five wonderful companies started offering gluten-free oats a few years ago. They are: Avena Foods (formerly Farm Pure), Bob’s Red Mill, Cream Hill Estates, Gifts of Nature, and Gluten-Free Oats. Each of these companies offers an array of oat products.

Last month at the big Natural Products Expo West that, Bob’s Red Mill launched two new gluten-free oat products: quick-cooking oats and oat flour.  These products join the gluten-free rolled oats that they have offered for a couple of years now.
To celebrate this launch, Bob’s Red Mill is giving away free copies of my latest book, 1,000 Gluten-Free Recipes, to the lucky winners in the contest outlined in the link below.  Follow the instructions and you could have your own copy of the world’s largest gluten-free cookbook.  http://www.bobsredmill.com/blog/2010/03/31/new-gluten-free-products-and-a-giveaway/

You can use the quick-cooking oats and oat flour in any recipe that calls for them. They measure the same and taste the same as the regular oats.  You might want to check with your physician before trying oats if you’re aren’t already eating them----just to be sure oats are right for you.

In the photo below, I’m holding a bag of the new oat flour. On the back of the bag, you’ll find my recipe for delicious Raspberry Oatmeal Bars, made with the new oat flour and quick-cooking oats. The beauty of this recipe is that it’s so versatile. You can use any type of jam filling you like---such as fig, blueberry, apricot, cherry, and so on.

If you don’t see any gluten-free oat products on your store shelf, ask the manager to order it. Stores want to see customer demand before they carry products, so let them know and then buy the product from them.  Hope you win a book!!
